‘Superior Goods and Household Goods’ |
Last Thursday there was an extravaganza of female activity happening all over the city as part of the ‘Feminist Takeover’. I managed to get to two of these events, one aptly titled ‘Superior Goods and Household Goods’ at Castlefield Gallery and another larger event at Manchester Art Gallery which took place amongst the permanent exhibits.
Providing fun and frolicking, artist Arnold Pollock posed with international female bodybuilder Karolina Botkova, copies of old Pornographic magazine covers (hello Hugh Heffner) hung on the gallery walls, refrigerated chicken breast fillets sat next to Old Master paintings and an artist pumping milk from her breast with a collage of flowers enveloping her head are amongst the most memorable, and remarkable. Not forgetting the important message of giving a platform to showcase the work of some independent, strong and creative women (male artists too at Castlefield). Smashing dominant ideologies of the female body and beauty by utilising the art forms of sculpture, collage, performance and video.
Over the next month, Wonder Women will shine a spotlight on women working in and from Manchester today, full of events, debate, music, art, gigs, profiles and more.
