It’s definitely the quirky pull of Vincent James’ work that draws me into Paper Gallery following the New Year break. And what a way to enliven these dark days with the fun, and cool, of ‘The Grand Scheme of Things’. Featuring a whole host of varied work from existing animations (made during his residency at Paper last Summer) to new 2D paper collages and a whole wall mural titled ‘Rubble in Paradise’. Objects and stones in freefall. A beating heart ‘The Last Word in Lonesome is Me’ is at the epicentre of this wreckage zone. If only all our hearts consisted of materials such as tissue paper, acetate, plastic straws and wire…
Everything about Vincent’s work draws you in. How could you not miss the exploding projected animation on the opposite wall. His cartoon-esque characteristics make everything instantly likeable yet there’s an abundance of precision in his cut-outs and enticing films. The artist is keen to project a post-apocalyptic feel to his work… wreckage, rubble, toxic waterfalls, beating hearts and brains, ‘Mental Block’ 2014 featured on the left is one of my favourites (ink on cut-out paper).
The embodiment of fun and gore is central to the exhibition so cheer up your Saturday’s this January with a trip to Paper.
