The more I’ve been painting the more interested (and concerned) I am about the process involved. It’s so vital. So fundamental. It’s increasingly important to me as a painter. The process of building up a painting in layers has always been a critical factor but the effect, placement and contrast of the different elements is crucial. How this comes together is a combination of thought, planning, imagination and that lovely jubbly element of surprise. As all artists know though this can be a good thing or it can be bad… and alter the harmonious balance of a painting immensely. This is why it can be such hard work being an artist, but also one of the most fulfilling and rewarding vocations too.
