Hockney is an absolutely talented and innovative artist, his art speaks for itself and its great to see a flourishing artistic community in his nearby home area of Saltaire, outside of Bradford.
This isn’t my first trip to Salts Mill and I was happy to see that they had changed around the exhibitions since my last visit about 18 months ago. They have a permanent collection of his works dating back from his formative years as an artist, lithograph etchings, screenprints to his most recent iPad paintings. You can see how technological innovations have crept into his art and how it has kept his practice alive and kicking with his innate curiosity. I can imagine his excitement as a big kid getting his first camera, iPad, etc! I absolutely love his canvas works too which he painted plein-air in the Yorkshire countryside expressing his joy for the local landscape.
It’s a great place (these old textile mills are to die-for and a World Heritage Site). My mix of b&w and colour photographs below show off what a fantastic building it is. Yorkshire is one of my favourite areas to visit as an artist due to the sheer amount of amazing art museums within miles of each other… Hepworth, Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Henry Moore in Leeds. Not a bad area to spend a few days.
